A New Adventure

Arriving in Chengdu, Sichuan, China at approximately 2330 (11:30 pm) the tarmac was lite with runway lights and with the glow of the nearby airport. We took stairs leading from the plane onto the tarmac and then onto a bus that would drive all 74 of us several minutes to the airport where we would go through immigration, then customs, retrieve our luggage, and meet the Peace Corps staff that would be training us for the next ten weeks. Now, I have lived ten full days in country, and much has happened in these ten days. From training sessions focused on TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), Safety and Security, Health, Peace Corps Policy, and Language. To developing a routine of getting meals, exercising, and hanging out with other trainees. These past ten days I have experienced much growth and have been busy learning a lot.

The view on the tarmac after we arrived in Chengdu. We found out the next morning that moments before we had landed there was an earthquake in the area and to be on the alert for aftershocks.
The first two weeks in country we stayed at a hotel in Chengdu. This was the picture of my room our first night. After two weeks we move in with a host family until August.
The view of the street from my hotel room.
After a run we often go get dinner. This is a soup dumpling dish I ordered after our first run. Despite the look of the picture, it was not too spicy.
This is one of two tracks at Sichuan University where a group of trainees and I go for our daily runs/ exercise.
Last Friday about sixteen of us went to get hotpot for dinner. The red broth on the left is spicy and the broth on the right is mushroom based.
For lunch and sometimes dinner we go here to get buns stuffed with different ingredients. An individual bun costs anywhere from 1 Yuan to 3 Yuan.
Last Sunday we went to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
And saw pandas.
A group photo of almost all of Peace Corps China 25. This was taken before we went into the park and everyone is excited to see the pandas. The park was huge and we had three hours to walk around.
Overall I am doing well and enjoying my time in the Peace Corps/ China.

Notes: Technology has been a learning curve, living in locations with varying degrees of Wi-Fi and so on. Once I have a better connection I hope to post more frequently. Moreover, I am still learning how to utilize all of WordPress’ features, this is why the format of this page is not what I would have liked, however it gets the point across!
